PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a realistic Battle Royale game created and published by PUBG Corporation which is a subsidiary of BlueHole. The PUBG's developer team is based in Seoul, South Korea.
Until recently, the creative director of PUBG was Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene who also created the very popular ArmA 2 mod DayZ. He left the team working on the game to focus on other projects.
PUBG became hugely successful when its early access was released in 2017. Despite a few bugs, the game rose to the top of the charts and stayed there for many years because of its realistic and innovative gameplay mechanics.
PUBG popularized the Battle Royale genre and established many staple game mechanics such as the initial parachute drop on the map (often an island of some kind), the "Blue Zone" to restrict the battle to an increasingly small area and of course the victory condition which is to be the last man standing in a large lobby of players.
PUBG is a hardcore First Person Shooter that can also be played in Third Person (on separate servers). Contrary to other Battle Royale games, classes are non existent and gunplay, strategy and tactics are the most important factors to win.
The player's skills reside most notably in their ability to aim precisely and control the recoil of their weapons.
Many streamers and pro players became very popular as a result from playing PUBG. This is the case for Shroud, DrDisrespect and Chocotaco for example.
PUBG was voted as the "Game Of The Year" at the 2018 Steam Awards.
The expression "Winner winner chicken dinner" used in PUBG is commonly used in gambling games to celebrate a victory. Since its use in PUBG, it became a common saying in other Battle Royale games to describe a win.
